When you have a leak or a burst pipe, the first thing to do is locate your mains stopcock and shut off your water supply. Keep turning the stopcock clockwise until it won’t turn any further. This will stop any more water from entering your plumbing system, though water already in the system may still leak out. If you have a radiator leak or burst central heating pipe, the water could continue flowing until the whole system is empty.
To minimise damage, place a bucket or towels around the area of the leak and change them as necessary.

If you feel the storage cistern is still feeding, close the gate valve on the cold water pipe (usually located near the tank). If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, shut off your gas supply with the emergency control valve at the meter, only if it’s safe to do so. Do not smoke, light matches, or use cigarette lighters. Avoid switching electrical appliances on and off, and extinguish any naked flames.
Open all windows and doors and evacuate the property. Call us immediately or another qualified Gas Safe Engineer.
Please do not turn the gas supply back on until a Gas Safe Registered Engineer has inspected it and given it the all-clear.
